Surface Comparison

Pickleball Court Surfaces Compared

Painted concrete, modular tile, and acrylic. Three ways to build a pickleball court in Louisiana — each with a different price, lifespan, and feel.

Why Surface Matters

Three Surfaces. Three Price Tiers. One Right Answer For Your Site.

There’s no “best” pickleball court surface in the abstract — the right surface depends on your site, your budget, your timeline, and how you want to use the court.

Goals & Poles installs all three surface types across South Louisiana. Below is the honest comparison — what each surface looks like, lasts like, and costs relative to the others — so you can pick the one that actually fits your project.

Surface FAQs

The questions homeowners and project managers ask before they pick a surface.

For South Louisiana’s heat, humidity, and heavy rainfall, acrylic-on-concrete is the most durable long-term surface with proper drainage. Modular tile handles humidity well as a mid-range option. Painted concrete lines on an existing slab is the most affordable path and works fine for casual play — Louisiana’s climate doesn’t rule out any of the three.

Painted lines on concrete typically need a repaint every 3–5 years. Modular tile lasts 10–15 years with individual tile replacement as needed. Acrylic-on-concrete lasts 15–25 years with proper resurfacing every 5–8 years. All three can be maintained and refreshed rather than fully replaced when wear shows.

Painted concrete lines are by far the most affordable, especially on an existing usable slab — you skip the foundation phase that drives most of the cost. Modular tile is mid-range. Acrylic-on-concrete is the premium tier. See our cost factors guide for more on what drives total project price.

You can play any level of pickleball on painted concrete — the ball behaves the same. What changes is the surface feel underfoot and the consistency of the bounce. Tournament-level players generally prefer acrylic or cushioned surfaces because the surface texture, grip, and bounce are more uniform and predictable.

Yes — modular tile is a strong choice. The interlocking tiles are replaceable, and the slight cushioning is easier on joints than bare concrete. The tradeoff is a more limited color palette, higher price, and visible tile joints compared to a seamless acrylic finish.

Yes — many homeowners start with painted lines on an existing slab, then upgrade to modular tile or acrylic later. The foundation work (drainage, base prep) is the expensive part; once it’s done, swapping the surface itself is a more contained project.
